The writing-process was really visible during today’s drop-ins. When I visited Caroline’s classroom, the students were very busy selecting portfolio pieces. I had a chat with one little girl who told me, without prompting that she was “probably going to show really good example of a first draft”! The students really had a good understanding of the process itself and could also explain very clearly how it helps them to make their writing better.
Year 4 teachers are using the idea of Writer’s Workshop in order to develop good writing habits in their students. Nicky explained that it is a little isolated from units of inquiry at the moment, but once the habits have been formed they can really start getting the students doing a lot more writing that is relevant to the units.
Here’s a slideshow of some of the writing process diagrams that I saw on display today. You can see that they are interactive – the students can place their name cards at the stage they are currently on, encouraging them to work deliberately through the process.
